Native vs Cross-Platform: An Honest Guide for Founders
React Native and Flutter have closed the gap with native development. We explain where that gap still exists and how to choose.
Founders ask us this question in almost every discovery call. The honest answer is that for most products, cross-platform is now the right default, but there are clear exceptions.
Go cross-platform when
You need both platforms at launch, your budget is constrained, the UI is mostly forms, lists and media, and you want a single team to own the product. React Native with Expo or Flutter will get you there faster and cheaper.
Go native when
Your product depends on heavy hardware access, real-time graphics, AR, complex background processing or the absolute latest OS features on day one. Native Swift and Kotlin still provide the best control here.
The hybrid path
Many of our clients start cross-platform and add native modules only where they are needed. This keeps velocity high while leaving room for platform-specific excellence.
